the missing tradition…

I have always held Alcoholics Anonymous in high regards.  I think that their organization, principles and practices are exceptional.  Everyone that I know who has had any involvement has had positive experiences.  Life change is the ultimate result.

I was re-reading some of their literature this morning when the twelfth principle jumped off the page at me:

“12.—And finally, we of Alcoholics Anonymous believe that the principle of anonymity has an immense spiritual significance. It reminds us that we are to place principles before personalities; that we are actually to practice a genuine humility. This to the end that our great blessings may never spoil us; that we shall forever live in thankful contemplation of Him who presides over us all.”

Wow

I think I may have found the missing tradition of most churches.

If I were to write church values, you can bet that you will see these familiar phrases…

“we are to place principles before personalities”

“we are actually to practice a genuine humility.”

“we shall forever live in thankful contemplation of Him who presides over us all.”
